Brig-Ayd Controls have been manufacturing hand controls, wheelchair lifts, steering knobs, wheelchair ramps, throttle and brake controls, clutch systems, driving aids for disabled drivers and have specialised in car conversions for the disabled since 1975 generating more than twenty five years experience. We offer a wide range of equipment to allow disabled people to use almost any make or model of vehicle. Our equipment is made to the highest engineering standard and is carefully fitted so as to be unobtrusive. Safety and reliability are the major factors influencing the design and fitting of controls. The service we offer includes adapting, designing and manufacturing equipment to suit the needs of the individual. We are also suppliers of selected items from the Guidosimplex range of products from Italy.

Our premises in Welwyn Garden City are well appointed to meet the needs of the disabled and are fully accessible to wheelchairs users. We also supply a large number of companies across the UK and Ireland who are able to install and maintain our range of quality products.

Then and NowMini controlsModern controls

It was in the late 1950's that Peter Briggs first adapted a car to meet the needs of a disabled driver. His wife, who had contracted polio, had bought a new Mini. Peter, a chartered engineer who worked on servo systems for radar during the war, used this experience to design and fit servo assisted hand controls with hydraulic links to the pedals of her car. Years later, after he had started trading as Brig-Ayd Controls, these servo systems formed the basis of many early adaptations and provided years of trouble free motoring for many disabled drivers.

Peter was joined by his son Owen in 1983 and in due course by his other son Brian. With their combined engineering expertise the business expanded and is now run by Owen and his wife Denise.  The business, with a full time staff of 10 is now directly involved in the conversion of over 1500 vehicles a year for disabled drivers and manufactures over 500 wheelchair hoists and lifting aids per year. Our aim is to provide a quality product and a personalised service at a competitive price to the customer.
